There are tremendous opportunities for marketing personnel in social sectors such as agriculture, healthcare and rural communication in India and management graduates need to explore these better, Dr S Ramadorai, Chairman of the National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) said.

Addressing the students of Asian School of Business (ASB) at the eighth annual convocation, Dr Ramadorai, who is also the Vice-Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services and the Chairman of ASB’s Board of Governors, asked the graduating students to choose a sector that is in need of good talent, instead of being carried away by the perceived ‘glamour’ of jobs.

He said the country needs motivated youth to get involved in businesses and community enterprises with social and humanitarian commitment. “As the agents of transformation they will experience the tremendous satisfaction of having made a difference, he added.

“India’s development path cannot be a replication of the West but must be a hybrid model that leverages all our strengths, traditional knowledge and builds on it by adopting innovative research and technologies,” Dr Ramadorai said.

The large young Indian population is driven by high aspirations, while Indian industries from IT to infrastructure, automobiles and telecom are growing to keep pace with the demands of the economy — together these are powering India on a growth path, he pointed out.

At the Convocation held at ASB’s campus in Technocity,  Dr Ramadorai gave away Diplomas to outgoing PGDM students and presented Certificates of Academic Excellence.

“Marginal differences in remuneration should not be the only deciding factor for choosing a profession,” said Mr. George M Thomas, Patron, ASB in his presidential address.

Mr. G Vijaya Raghavan, Member Secretary, ASB Board of Governors; Prof K G Satheesh Kumar, Dean of Academics;  Prof V Harihara Subramanian, Dean of Placement and Management Development Programmes; Raj Nair, Member, ASB Board of Governors  and former Director of ASB Prof S Rajeev also spoke at the function.
