Modernised Fish Market at Kazhakoottam inaugurated

A modernised fish market at Kazhakoottam in Thiruvanathpuram inaugurated today, February 15, 2016  by Mr. K Babu, Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise, Kerala.

“While projects worth Rs 23.90 crore have been completed, Rs 86.44 crore worth projects are under construction and projects including modernised fish markets with a total outlay of Rs 6.01 crores at Pazhayakunnumel, Nadayara and Attingal have been submitted for approval,” said the Minister.

Set up by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation Limited (KSCADC), aimed at the comprehensive development of the coastal areas in the state, the Kazhakoottam market, which cost Rs 232.64-lakh is part of a chain of hygienic fish markets, with 96 commercial stalls, chill room, flake ice unit, an effluent treatment plant and a toilet block. The 668 sq m market is fitted with modern amenities, including slab and sink for cutting and cleaning fish, and a clog-proof drain.

KSCADC has been implementing projects worth Rs 600 crores in Kerala, of which Rs 116.35 crores worth projects have been implemented in Thiruvananthapuram.

As part of the integrated fishing village development program, Mr.  Babu distributed Rs 40,000 each to around 100 fishermen from the fishing villages of Thumba and Valyaveli.

The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) provided Rs 195.68 lakh of the total cost of the market and the remainder of Rs 36.96 lakh came from the government. KSCADC, with the support from NFDB, is setting up a network of 52 modern hygienic fish markets in the state.

The function which was presided by Adv MA Vahid MLA. Other dignitaries at the function were Councillors Mrs. Bindu and Mrs. Prathibha Jayakumar, KSCADC MD Dr K Ambady, Director Board Member Mr. Veli Varghese, Chief executive Engineer Mr. Mohan Das .
